What are custom orthotics?

Hudson Valley Foot Associates creates custom orthotics and shoe inserts, especially for your feet. Just as you see the eye doctor for glasses or contacts to correct eyesight issues, you see your foot doctor for custom orthotics to correct issues with your feet or the way you walk.

Custom orthotics work in several ways to correct issues, including enhancing shock absorption, reducing foot stress, and improving foot muscle function.

When might I need custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics can help nearly anyone. About three-quarters of Americans have foot problems at one point or another. Orthotics are an effective way to correct or prevent issues such as:

  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Bunions
  • Heel pain
  • Achilles tendon issues
  • Dropped metatarsal
  • Corns and calluses
  • Arthritis
  • Knee pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Leg cramps
  • Shin pain
  • Tired feet
  • Intoeing (inward pointing feet)
  • Out-toeing (outward pointing feet)

Even if you don’t have foot or ankle problems, you may need custom orthotics if you have signs of uneven gait (walking pattern) or irregular weight distribution, such as consistently uneven wear on your shoes.

Custom orthotics can also be an essential part of diabetic foot care because they can help protect the feet and prevent the worsening of foot wounds.

How does the custom orthotics process work?

The process starts with a complete physical exam, observation of your gait, and examination of your current shoe soles. The experienced podiatrists consider many factors to determine what type of orthotics you need, including your physical health, age, recreational activities, job, and more.

Hudson Valley Foot Associates has a state-of-the-art digital foot-casting system. The system creates a 3D map of your foot, and then the foot care specialists use an advanced computer program to virtually correct imbalances and create a new 3D model. This model then serves as the blueprint for your new custom orthotics.

How does orthotics fitting work?

When your new orthotics are ready, you’ll come into the office for a fitting appointment to try them on and make sure they fit perfectly. All custom orthotics come with a one-year warranty, and the cost of your orthotics includes three months of follow-up visits. The orthotics warranty covers any adjustments or repairs during the first year.

Because children grow so quickly, orthotics warranties for children under 18 include out-grow coverage for two years after the initial fitting. During the out-grow period, you can buy replacement orthotics at a special discounted rate if your child needs new ones.
